Douglas Smathers, Executive Director

BS Recreation Studies, Ohio University

With a double degree in Recreation studies, Doug joins us with many years of experience and knowledge of the outdoors. Doug has been working with children, young adults, and adults with varying disabilities most of his life. Last summer Doug was our Program Director, he is very excited to move into a new roll this summer as Executive Director. Before coming to Talisman, Doug worked eight years at a summer camp for children with special needs as a behavior specialist. Additionally, Doug has been a Outdoor Education Instructor for many years in his home state of Ohio. Wearing many different hats, Doug has also facilitated High & Low Ropes courses and facilitated numerous corporate, communication, teambuilding and leadership workshops. Doug enjoys spending time in the great outdoors, adventure activities, and riding his motorcycle he built.

Amy Allen, Admissions Counselor

BS Psychology, College of Charleston

This will be Amy’s 5th summer at Talisman and she can’t wait for kids to get back on campus. Amy grew up in the Pacific Northwest and worked in summer camps as an environmental education instructor, low ropes course facilitator, and general counselor throughout high school. She made the move to the east coast to attend school at the College of Charleston and has fallen in love with all that the south has to offer. Since starting at Talisman in 2009 Amy has filled a number of roles as a direct care staff, program supervisor and now admissions counselor. In her spare time Amy enjoys playing competitive ultimate Frisbee, backpacking, and playing with her dog, Ollie.
