Drama, art and music are important outlets for children and teens to be able to express themselves. For children with special needs like Asperger’s syndrome or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the arts can also be an outlet for communication and social skill development.
At Talisman Camps, summer camps for children with ADHD, Asperger’s and other learning differences, a comprehensive arts program provides a creative way for kids to learn new skills. Whether campers are curious about theater, are trained musicians, or have a knack for arts and crafts, Talisman’s arts program has something for everyone.
Theater
Zach Eden has had a passion for theater since childhood, and now has an opportunity to share his love for the arts with the campers at Talisman. He introduces children to theater through group discussions, Broadway movies and improvisation exercises geared toward helping kids act out social interactions. All of this practice culminates in the children putting on a talent show for the entire camp.
Not only do children at Talisman’s special needs summer camps provide the entertainment, but they also learn about every aspect of putting on a show, from designing the playbill to making their own sets and costumes to running operations backstage. This way, every camper can be involved in the production, whether they crave the spotlight or prefer to stay behind the scenes.
Campers at Talisman also have the opportunity to participate in “puppet theater.” They make the puppets and the theater themselves, and act out skits using the puppets they created.
Through these experiences, children with ADHD and Asperger’s learn to stay focused on the moment, overcome fears of being in front of their peers, and practice appropriate social interactions and teamwork.
Arts & Crafts
Arts and crafts are a fun and memorable way for children with Asperger’s and ADHD to engage in hands-on learning and practice new skills. With Zack’s guidance, campers make mosaic stepping stones that represent their talisman, and may leave their artwork on Talisman’s campus as a way to be remembered for years to come.
“Green” projects are another camp favorite that stretches the imagination and teaches valuable lessons about caring for the environment. Children make guitars from a shoebox and other recycled materials, and rain sticks from paper towel rolls and beads. Campers are invited to take home much of their artwork as a memory of their time at Talisman.
Arts and crafts projects help campers learn how to work well with others and express themselves in new ways. Because some projects are challenging, campers also learn patience, how to cope with frustration and how to ask for help when needed.
Music
Talisman campers who are interested in music, dance and playing instruments can utilize their gifts at the talent show. Zach helps the children choreograph their performances, if desired, and also coordinates theme dances such as Hawaiian night.
Talisman balances fun and creativity with opportunities for kids to step outside their comfort zone. Through projects like working with clay and listening to music, children and teens with Asperger’s get the sensory experiences they crave, while being encouraged to try new things.
“Art provides new ways for children to learn about themselves and others and to express themselves without writing or talking,” says Zach. “Through art, young people get to go to another world for awhile.”
