TOBA Boating

TOBA (Talisman Open Boating Adventures) is an in-depth paddling course for teenagers 14-17 with ADD, ADHD, LD, or Aspergers. Campers progressively build paddling skills as they move from lake to whitewater, eventually learning to navigate Class II-III rivers. The experience allows for the development of leadership ability, good judgment, safe and healthy decision-making, a strong work ethic, and increased confidence and self-esteem.

Personal Growth
Paddling requires concentration, effort, and effective communication with your partner. TOBA campers are challenged and guided daily in improving all three. We focus on both group interaction and the development of personal responsibility. We use an insight-oriented group process to increase understanding of the connection between choices and consequences. Overall confidence increases as participants master paddling skills and meet greater challenges each day. Recognition of individual accomplishment in 6 key areas provides each camper with a sense of progress toward adulthood.

Activities
The TOBA equation for success begins with the basics. We begin paddling instruction on our on campus pond, where basic techniques and safety skills are learned. Experienced instructors make use of a multi-sensory teaching approach to accommodate the learning differences of campers with Learning Disabilities and other special needs. Then we progress to a gentle river to gain experience on moving water. As the group gains confidence, we prepare for a long expedition on one of several magnificent NC whitewater rivers. The trip is technically challenging and visually beautiful, enabling participants to stay on task easily. We also spend a day each on a high ropes course and a rock climbing adventure. [Participants must be strong swimmers.]
